I am cold. There is snow on the ground here.

The temperature is -10℃, or something close to it, I believe.
And my home is poorly heated.

I wish I didn't live somewhere that is so cold, but I have employment here.

I am listening to very positive Rap song called "everything will be alright" I keep listening to it
for almost 2 days!

I don't get to see snow very often, here... that's one of the problems with living in the south.

I am glad that someone created this thread

i didn't know that "I am cold" is standard english.
it sounds to me they are cold by themselves.

"i feel cold" sounds natural to me. In japanese
word by word translation of "i am cold" is 私 は 寒い。
in japanese, 寒い generally implys cold climate, cold environment .
 i am chilly with temperature.

>>9 Both "I am cold" and "I feel cold" are said.
"I am cold" is short for "I am feeling cold", I believe.
But, they mean the same thing usually.

>>13
Everybody has hair all over their skin, it is just very fine and tiny for most people.

I'm not "snow man". Your response makes me smile, though.

I just said something to start conversation, or "break the ice" as they say.
Now that I think of it, speaking of snow is a really funny way to do it.

But still, I am feeling cold.

>>16
Caucasian people sometimes have thicker hair, especially in Russia and such places.

But many do not.

"I am cold." is not short for "I am feeling cold.", and it is natural.
Most people would say "I'm cold.", though.

Who is it that performs the song?

Right now, I am listening to an older song titled "NECESSARY".
It is from the band Every Little Thing.
I think I like the guitarist, Ichiro, or "Ikkun" as some call him. He is very handsome.

I'm not 4, but I live in the south and I can answer this question.
Hurricane Katrina was very strange and scary. It was strange because so
many people were in trouble and the response to help these people was very slow.
Many American started to lose confidence in their government.
Thankfully, I wasn't in hurricane Katrina.

Sorry if I wrote too much. I hope this answers your questions.

Yeah, neocon is neoconservatism.

And to not be devoid of content...
MATSUE, Shimane Pref. (Kyodo) Health minister Hakuo Yanagisawa referred
to women as "birth-giving machines" in a speech Saturday on welfare and
health care.
Addressing prefectural assembly members of the Liberal Democratic Party
in Matsue, the 71-year-old Yanagisawa touched on the nation's declining
birthrate and said, "The number of women aged between 15 and 50 is fixed.
Because the number of birth-giving machines and devices is fixed, all
we can ask for is for them to do their best per head, although it may
not be so appropriate to call them machines."

were, Bush's pride and hubris wouldn't let him do it.

In my opinion, Eastern Asian women and black women should be excluded from figure skating competition.
As you know, every people instinctively hope a 'white' woman is a winner though it can be discrimination for an Asian competitor and a black competitor.
That's because ugliness makes people all over the world uncomfortable simultaneously.

Good evening. Less than an hour ago, hackers from FBI joined others from around
the world to bring down *chans everywhere. And you will be launching the largest
internet battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new
meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united anonymously in our common interests.
Perhaps it's fate that today is the twenty seventh of January, and you will
once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or
persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to be
anonymous. To exist. And should we win the day, the twenty seventh of January
will no longer be known as an internet holiday, but as the day the world
declared in one voice: "We will no go quietly into the night! We will not
vanish without a fight!" We're going to live on anonymously! We're going to
survive! Today we celebrate our ANONYMOUS DAY!

281 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2007/01/29(月) 02:36:40
>>279
Not always, but mostly. As long as it's their native language we
usually can talk, even if there might be a few missunderstandments.
There are some Swedes who whine about how it's impossible to understand
Danish, I'm amused at that, as I have very little problem comprehending
it (Where I am is not too far away from Denmark, as well as that I
sometimes used to watch Danish tv-channels as a kid, for the cartoons, etc).
Norwegian/Swedish/Danish sort of like very different dialects of the same
language, only with different grammar rules, sounds and words. ;-D
Norwegian for instance, has a very sing-song kind of speech pattern. Danish
on the other hand sounds like the bastard child of "Scandinavian" and German.
(note that no such language as "Scandinavian" exists.)

so swedes can read norwegin or danish without difficulity?
is pronunciation the biggest hurdle rather than grammer and dialects?

while norwegian can't create automobile, why can swedes create automobile?

in japan, norway's image is thinner than sweden.
at most ---fishery,whale hunting,munk,fjord,winter sports---image.
i know a-ha are norwegians though.

still norway is the one of the wealthiest country in europe.
i don't know why.

oh,genius mathmatician Abel? was norwegian too.

i am not well-informed.but i suppose

anyway it can be said in japan
sweden is more imppresive than norway.

Ordinary Japanese doesn't know the differences beween Norwaigan and Swadish people.

i'm not sure i know more about sweden....

anyway, sweden's image is stronger.

>>284
Hmm... Whether it is without or with difficulty, I think that depends on the person.
Their own dialect as well as where they grew up definitely is a factor, I think...
However, Swedes shouldn't have a big problem with getting the general gist of a message
or speech in either language, even if they may be fuzzy about the details.
I think the biggest problems prolly are the pronounciation/dialects and the different words/false friends.
False friends as in words that resemble a word in one's own language, but doesn't at all mean the same.
To take a Danish-Swedish example. "Blöd" (it's supposed to have a danish "ö", not a Swedish one, though)
looks like "blöt". However, the Danish "blöd" means 'soft', and the Swedish "blöt" means 'wet'.

I was in new york in 1975. I saw the beginning of punk era.. The first what I see of punks in 1976 was fanzine called "Punk." formatted A4 size, made on Xerox machine.
One of the editors had a strange name -- Legs McNeil. That name "Legs" have shocked me. It was a lot of comics inside and caricatures.
I remember one where a girl denied some guy his invitation to dance. She said, "Sorry but no, I only dance with faggots."
Year later punk shops were prospering in Lower East Side, amongst them was a shop called "Trash and Vaudeville," they sold clothes.

There's a very serious barrier to entry for non-Japanese speakers, too. I suppose if nobody reads or posts on 2ch, then that's one way of solving the bandwidth and cpu problems.

>>413
I don't think so. In fact, some other boards I visit is up and
running very fine. But as you guessed, some organizations such as
TV stations and their subsidiaries have been very active to ask
law-makers for restriction on free-speech against Internet users.
You know what's happening to them, right? They broadcast TV programs
based on falsified data, and there are many websites that point out
those programs tell lies.

Yes, I haven't been able to post until I started going through a Japanese proxy server. That's not what I was originally talking about, though. (thanks, >>415 , for clearing up what "人大杉" means.)

If you click on the "last 50 posts", you get a japanese error message with links to something about mobile phone access (I think) or another page that (I'm pretty sure) talks about the various 2ch reader programs.

The first link from there directs you to some random "turbo proxy" page that wants you to download some .exe file.  The second page points you to monazilla - again, with a plethora of text with little explanation.

As it happens, none of the modules there actually work with my system; I've been using http://bbs2ch.sourceforge.jp/ and it seems to work decently, although I can't figure out what half the options are in the preferences.

With no false modesty, I'm very technical, quite intelligent, and have some japanese language ability - and it took me a good hour or so to figure out exactly wtf was going on and how to post. And now they're making it even harder.

In Japanese parliament, a gentleman in military uniform stands on the platform
with a script in his hand, and at the front of him more than hundred councilors
salutes him solemnly. But in the next moment, councilors are muddled up much,
because the gentleman suddenly roles his script and look them through it like a
telescope with loose smile…

He was called "Emperor (Tenno) Taisho" and he was actually an idiot, who cannot
perform his task as emperor. This "telescope-incident" has been told privately,
because in Japan it's forbidden to speak of scandals about imperial family officially.

Such idiocy of him was hereditary and took root in the traditional incest by pre-Meiji
emperors. They took wives from and give daughters to only a few related noble houses.

It's rumor that also current emperor's cousin has a mild idiocy. And a misbirth of
Masako, the wife of prince might be actually an induced abortion because the baby had
some invalid or idiocy.

スコットランド人、i want you to spread this news over scotland and UK.

i want to weed out vermin from imperial family.

her parents doesn't have any male. so her family will perish sooner or later.
sooner,the better.
she should get out of imperial family right now. it costs japanese tax, though.
she will get hundreds of thousands of money from government when she leaves
imperial family.

>>494
of course, she doesn't have intelligence or academic ability to
pass edinburgh university entrance exam. backdoor entry

Wow... I didn't think that anything controversial happened
at Edinburgh University.

Maybe it'll be more fun than I thought...

>>497
So there are people protesting for the abolition of the imperial
family in Japan?

Interesting...

I've personally protested for the abolition of the English monarchy.

But then that's maybe because I'm a nationalist and I don't
want to be ruled from another country.

as i remember ,80% of japanese support imperial family.

japanese communists party officially advocate the abolishment of imrerial system.

social democratic party(former socialist party) tolerates current system, but they
want to do away with imperial system gradually.

one leftist group at the end of last year, held convention and that arouse little controversy.
they compared children of crown prince? to monkey, and someone, who played role of
imperial family, throwed away "monkey" from his hands.

dramatic sketches included some vulgar sexual things.

but not national controvery. one weekly magazine picked up this story.

in japan, male only succeed status of tenno.

to guarantee tenno family, there are several splinter groups.

girl in scotland is grand cousin? of crown prince.

every imperial families ,including mainstream tannno family
don't have any male child. so tennnoke was in danger of perishment.

brother of crown prince had his first son last year.

though i am not an enthusiastic pro-tennno family, i don't deny tennno family.

So she doesn't actually attend the university?

At first I assumed that she was from Waseda as Edinburgh University has an exchange program with that uni.

>>501
I see. So it's not as serious as it is here.

I've only met one person in my entire life who supports the royal family.

she attends university. she was complaing about test score or whatever on the blog.

i mean she could enter Edinburgh University becaus she is "special"

in UK , isn't it the case? they enter prestigious university, especially oxford university.
i don't think they are as intelligent as their title.

but the girl in scotland is the worst.

by the way, generally people from imperial family enter gakusyuuin university--now private university, once
university for aristocrats.

Yeah, royalty always has it easy...

Thanks for explaining that to me.^^

We have an exchange course with Gakusyuuin too...

I just didn't know much about that university.

Wow, this thread is interesting.
I didn't know this thread just untill now.
How many English (native) spekers are here?
スコットランド人, merkin, a few more?
And the stories talked about are interesting, too.

as i recall, son of charles attended edinburgh university, didn't he?

it's shocking many scots ,even upper class people don't like current imperial system.

so most of his alumni didn't welcome him or had littele interest in him?
scotland people and sctland media are not as enthusiastic as england's?

i think that he is handsome and he has been praised on the media

scotish girls are not interested in him?

>>507
I think you mean St Andrews, another Scottish university.

Well, we consider England a foreign country and so I'm sure you can understand why we reject their royal family and government.

Maybe a Scottish girl would be interested in him, but I can't imagine it.

Blair is scottish. how does it feel?

You can say that again.
He must take it consideration that this board is for us English learners, not for him a native.
needless to say,it's nothing for him to express his thougts and ideas in English.
On the other hand,it's so tough for us to composing English sentences.
The only thing I make it a rule to do every day is making English sentences.
So that the contents doesn't matter to me at all.

That wasn't an introduction. I've been around for a bit. I took what he said as an attack, is all.
Jokes don't translate well, and dry ones such as that (if it is indeed a joke) do not transfer
well over textual mediums in the first place.

521 :Ether ◆4p9idX66UM :2007/02/05(月) 14:58:03
>>519
That doesn't have anything to do with it. I was only speaking to the person who told me that I can't speak English.

I understand that's what the board is here for. I came here to help everyone with their English and for some good conversation as well. :)

So the restriction by 2ch on non-J people were finally lifted.

Well, I use a program called "bbs2chreader" that allows me to access 2ch.

I don't think I can do it the usual way anymore.

Where did you know you could download the software?
I use a microsoft Internet browser, and I can only read the past
10 posts, so it's hard to keep track of what's happening here if
you refer to the posts such as done in >>300.

>>524

This restriction of the access has been really terrible, BTW I'm accessing

Have you ever visited 4ch? A 2ch-like message system mostly for English
speakers?

>>524
It's an addon for Mozilla Firefox.

You can get it here:

528 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2007/02/05(月) 16:23:59
>>527
What do you mean? Metal? Is it a figure of speech to say 4ch is
sluggish and few people post a day?

One question. Even now I can access 2ch, meanwhile you don't without
the program. So what will happen if I install it to my computer?

Do you know several English speaking people make Japanese vlogs
and upload them on Youtube?

>>528
Oh sorry about that... only someone from 4-ch would understand that phrase.^^

4-ch is kind of sluggish, but more people have been using it lately.

Especially DQN.

>>529
I can only see the first 10 posts in each thread unless I use this program.

It allows you to browse and post on 2ch as you did before.

>>531
When I couldn't post due to my Internet sever problem, I visited
4ch, but I didn't go to the DQN board, so I didn't know it was busy.
I went to Manga, Politics, News. Anyway, metal is used to imply
mental people are increasing, or something like that?
Can you explain what the phrase mean?

I can talk with you guys like this. If many more people posted
at once like in some other popular boards, I couldn't even
have a decent conversation - instead, I would just post, no response.

Well, the phrase is strange...

"Too much metal for one hand" is when you make a corna sign with both hands together like this:

And DQN is too much metal for one hand.

Nothing on DQN actually makes much sense.

do you sympathize with them?

i think they diverged from bnp.

whites. they don't want to infight.

i think they are closer to hitler.

why north of england?
i suppose there are less non whites in north of england
than urban areas like london.
so less friction between whites and immigrants.

when we go to more suburbs , people there tend to be more conservative?

north of england is almost scotland, isn't it?

I just have to make it clear that I do NOT sympathize with those racist English assholes.

They stand for English ideals, not Scottish.

Racism in Scotland is almost non-existent these days, while in England it's getting worse and worse.

There are racists here, but nowhere near as many as there are in England.

The majority of Scottish people want independence from the UK and I for one hope it happens soon.

>>584
The north of England is geographically close to Scotland, but it's completely different culturally.

People in that part of England hate all other cultures, including Scottish.

Here's a scene that's becoming more common among the English working class:
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/images/2006/02/334590.jpg

That picture is of people in Leeds, where the Nazi British People’s Party are especially popular.

It's kind of scary.

i mean some racist english peple want to be independent.
they want to dissolve united kingdom and bring UK back to separate states.

they hate non-whites. they don't hate scotish. they esteem scotish right.

you could share the same interest with them. the interest of independence.

i suppose many scotish want to be on their own. but many english want to be UK as it is.
at the present time, taking advantage of them is a choice.

>but nowhere near as many as there are in England
isn't it because stotland has less immigrants than english?
sorry, but i predict scotland will become more conservative when immigrants swarm into scotland.

scary ,but funny. UK including england beated nazi germany.
nowadays they immitate nazi salute...complicated.

speaking about working class, wayne rooney has working class face.

Is anybody up?
Isn't the sentence below a little weird?
If so, how do you rectify it?

Human beings are talkative creatures and always have been,
so far as we can see. It was our urge to communicate with
each other and growing ability to do so that was probably
the chief factor in the development that made us different
from all other animals.

They certainly do; I'm using bbs2chreader right now.

Hm, I'd copyedit it a little bit:

As far as we know, human beings are talkative creatures and always have been. It was probably our urge to communicate with each other, and increasing ability to do so, that was the primary factor in our evolving differently from all other animals.

Your original sentence is quite good; I've seen far worse in (natively speakers') freshman college essays. If you like, I can go into detail about how and why I made the changes I did.

>>611 is not my original.
I found it in a high-scool students board and it's an English sentence from some text book.
I thouight it was a little weird and would rewrite it basically like you did.
I would say:
Human beings are talkative creatures and always have been,
so far as we can see. It was our urge to communicate with
each other and growing ability to do so, which was probably
the chief factor in the development that made us different
from all other animals.

One thing I'm not really sure is what the "it" is in "It was our urge to communicate with
each other and growing ability to do so."

I would greatly appreciate it if you give me some more advice.

As far as we know, human beings are talkative creatures and always have been. Our urge to communicate with each other and our growing ability to do so was probably the chief factor in the development that made us different from all other animals.

>>615
I think that "it" refers to "our urge to communicate with each other and our growing ability to do so."

I can't be 100% sure about that one though, sorry.

As you can see, I omitted the "it" in my version of that paragraph.

>>616

Well, if kanji is difficult for a Japanese person, then imagine how
difficult it is for me. Each day I learn a few and I try to learn at
least 20-30 a week. It's getting easier as I begin to remember
primitives and stroke order but it's still a lot of work.

スコット! you are right!
I couldn't possibly emphasise more on the importance of stroke order.
Personally I find people who right with wrong orders kind of stupid, and annoying. Well that's probaly me though.

Most importantly, when you write kanji on the Nintendo DS,
you should know the correct stroke ordersb or the DS won't recognize what you write on the touch screen correctly.
That's because the DS uses stroke orders to recognise hiragana, katakana, and kanji, and maybe other ones I don 't know.
I sometimes hear people complaining about the DS's kanji recognition function.
Most often those people's stroke order just simplly suck.
Maybe it's a good way to use the DS to learn kanji and their correct stroke orders.

The tragic Pacific Wars killing many-many innocent people was begun and ended
under Hirohito's declaration. This fact confirms Hirohito's responsibility for that
f*ckin war very plainly.

But, in spite of this plain fact, war-criminal Hirohito neither was forced to take
suicide like evil Hitler, nor was executed by people like f*ckin pig Mussolini. Rather
he continued to live richly as Emperor, supported by ignorant Japanese, who yet
remain brain-washed by Emperor and his puppet government.

Now many parts of Japanese people don't get angry at it, that even now these sh*ts
reign people. What did they learn from that cruel war? Regrettably they learned no-
thing because they never charged Hirohito with his war crimes. Current Japanese are
very same as they before 1945, who couldn't stop Hirohito's f*ckin rampage.

Hirohito died in peace without be judged for his f*ckin crimes. And Akihito, Hirohito's
f*ckin dirty bastard, now reign Japan shamelessly. We Japanese people, as victims of
the war, must judge them, in order to show to world the Japanese real rebirth as
true democratic and pacific nation.

That's stupid. Japan was forced into a war. In fact, almost
every country is forced into a war, because of economic, social
and political pressures.
Enough of this "evil empire" bullshit. No one accepts rule
under someone blatantly "evil". It's not WWII that ruined countries, it ended over
50 fucking years ago. It's the stubborness and reluctance of those
countries to accept change.
The Japanese actually learnt a fair amount from the "cruel war".
After having two of their cities nuked, as well as other large
cities firebombed and destroyed, they accepted they had living
in a militaristic society and went about changing it, so much
so that they have become an economic superpower. There are still
some aspects of Japanese society that need to be changed, and are
in the process of changing, but no one can deny that the country
has undergone an amazing change in the past 50 years.

And if you are complaining about evil leaders, what about Kim
Jong Il and his "dirty bastard" son? What about the Chinese government,
who reacts to threats by wiping them out? At least people know about
what the Japanese did in WWII. In China they fucking deny that atrocities
like the one at Tienamen Square even happened. Some people in China have
never heard of it.

If the Americans had executed the emperor, all hell would have
broken loose in Japan. People would have gone crazy. US reports
strongly suggested against any execution or punishment against
the emperor.

And as far as I can tell, the emperor does nothing these days. It's
your prime minister. And you voted him in, so it's all your fault
anyway.

>>838
No, the kilt isn't very popular these days...
I guess we're in a similair situation as the
Japanese are with kimonos.

Kilts tend to be worn only on special occassions
like weddings and stuff.

>>844
Well, I'm outside of Japan.

And...

Sorry, I'm going to have to correct you there.

Koreans are stereotyped worldwide as being petty and hypocritical.

The fact that you are posting on a Japanese BBS just to annoy
the Japanese doesn't do much to disprove that stereotype.

Actually, the AA character "Nida" is gaining popularity on English BBS
sites such as 4-ch.

I have Korean friends,and I don't like how Koreans
are discriminated against, but it does happen.

I personally have great respect for both Japanese and Korean culture,
and I hope that I can learn Korean too someday.

>>844
Just so you know, Koreans are seen as extremely self-conceited people
in the world.
I don't know where they get that notion, but they feel they are
smarter and sperior to other nations for no reason.
I hope they will open their eyes one of these days and realize how
embarrassing to looking down on others to feel one's speriority.

Actually, Koreans have much stronger accents than Japanese.
The only difference is that Koreans don't realize
how bad their pronunciation is, but Japanese do and try to
make it better.

>>853

I mean Boa's pronunciation is quite good.

All I can say is this, who are you to judge anybody's English? Koreans, Japanese no less.

Before judging anything, you better look at yourself.

>>854
I agree with you that Boa and Yunsona speak very good Japanese.
What I meant was Koreans in general have very strong accents when they speak
English, much so than Japanese.

>>856

He has asked someone's help and advice, like me...
Because he is really worried about his job these days.
Such as he's thinking of going to quit his job and so on.
To tell the truth, I broke up with him about 5 months ago.
He's 5 years yonger than me. He graduated from university
in Nagoya, and decided to start new job in Osaka last spring.
After few months later, he got transferd to Nara.
He was really busy from then on. (He is still busy now)
He couldn't take a day off,and had to work overtime.
So it was so hard to keep relations between him and me
at that time.
But we still keep in touch by e-mail once in a while.

I wish I could help his matter. But I couldn't advice to him
easily... I hope to it turns out well!

I'm sorry for writing my poor English diary.
Thank you for reading.

It was always burning since the world's been turning.
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it, but we're trying to fight it.

from ancient Chinese. visit wikipedia or whatever if you
need to know more.

I did it. I certainly have heard of "Yin and Yang" in Japanese,
though I have no idea what it exactly means. All I can do is guess
that all things are double-faced - good and bad, benign and evil,
and what not. Am I correct?
