Let's read these books and have a chat.
( つ@O

This thread is created for readers of Harry Potter.

Reading English books and exchanging opinions in English will
improve your English. So let's get together and have fun talking
about the books!

*Before posting, please read the general rule in this thread.
There will be spoilers in the thread. And do not forget a [spoiler] tag on it.
Maybe something really big at the top with some spaces, like:

= = = = SPOILER! book/movie: [number/name]= = = =

Write the spoiler here.

= = = END SPOILER~! = = =

The couple of spaces in between would let people skip over it if they wanted to

I think this doesn't include a spoiler, so...

As you know, you can't Apparete in the Hogwarts castle of witch craft and
wizardry, but Dobby the house elf and Creature actually Apparated to
fulfill the promise they made with Harry Potter. What made them able
to Apparate? House elves are allowed to Apparete even in the castle?

What's your view on this?

That's very mysterious to me too.

This is just my guess, but as Hermione says, you can't Apparete within
Hogwarts. The thing is, house elves might be using another skill.
I don't know what J.K.Rowling would say, but there must be elves's magic
even a wizard can't perform. They are natural, in other words.
House elves are not taught curses or charms in school (at least there hasn't
been any discription in the books), and still they perform good magics!
They can pop in and out anywhere by some skill.

That's my wild guess, though.

= = = = SPOILER! book: [The half blood prince]= = = =

People estimate that R.A.B is Regulus Black. He stole the Horcrux
in the cave, you know. And the perchment he left in the fake lockt
said he, RAB, would die soon after he broke the Horcrux.
I have two questions here. How long ago do you think RAB found it
and he only found one Horcrux? Isn't there a possibility he looked
for the others?
And another question is, is R.A.B already dead? If he's dead, then
how can Harry confirm wether he really broke it?

= = = END SPOILER~! = = =

You don't disagree with you, but I think the author may have made a mistake
she herself didn't notice, which she wouldn't admit. House elves obviously
Apparate within the Hogwarts castle. That's a mistake.

I mean, I don't.

Nagini can perform a charm?

I don't think so. All it can do is bite someone. But its teeth
must be really sharp and so Harry will take the pain to finish
it off with great difficulty.

To answer your first question, I suppose at least after the first distruction
of you know who. Maybe around the time when Crouch's trial took place.

The second question is hard to answer. It's still up in the air whether
he's dead or alive.

15 :Lubosuka:2006/07/14(金) 16:07:46
Hey, I didn't know the Harry Potter thread was created.

I've decided to get married to a Japanese male who reads Harry
Potter.

The snake is a mysterious creature, you know. Really big.
What's more, it can comunicate with Voldemort. Yes,
I think it can do magic.

But I'll charm you, my boy.

And of course, yes, I am a big fan of the books. But don't forget
I'm a big fan of Japanese men. :)

Hmm, you have a point. Sure, Nagini the snake is quite different.

>>19
No, no, don't get me wrong. I didn't mean to offend you or anything.
And I've been talking with you.

I also think Nagini is a special serpent, but it's just a snake.
Maybe Voldemort did something to Nagini that could turn it to a
more dangerous creature.

>>25
Oh, I thought wrong. I'm sorry. Forgive me.

Yes, Nagini is terrible. And I'm not sure whether Voldemort did something
to the snake. Remember? You know who is a persle tongue, and naturally
he can order snakes to do anything as he likes.

I WANT to talk about Harry Potter but you always yell at me to get out. Haha.
It's okay lubosuka I still like you. n_n

by the way, I don't think nagini is magical. It doesn't ever really say that she is. If she WAS magical, I think the author would have said something about it. :3

29 :Lubosuka:2006/07/14(金) 16:40:21
>>28
You seem to forget this, Bob. Nagini is used as a Horcrux.

AAAAHHH, I'm not >>28, but I think you are right.
Voldemort did something that turned him into a Horcrux!
That's it! Nagini is really magical.

Does anyone think that Harry's scar is a horcrux?

>>31
Woah! I never thought of that!
"One must live without the other" would deffinatly apply there.

33 :Lubosuka:2006/07/14(金) 16:47:53
>>30
Good. Yes, Nagini has a piece of Voldemort's soul in its body.
Voldemort is the worst wizard ever. That means Nagini is also
a terrible snake.
And I'm sure a Horcrux is hard to destroy. It cost the right hand of Dumbldore's
to break the curse put on a Horcrux. Very magical.

34 :Lubosuka:2006/07/14(金) 16:51:55
>>31
I'm really sorry, my boy, but I don't think so.
Dumbldore said you had to kill someone to creat a Horcrux.

And he also mentioned Voldemort didn't get into Harry's body.
Remember?

>>32
YOU NEED TO THINK MORE!!

>>34
Except that Voldemort gave him the scar right after killing his
parents.

36 :Lubosuka:2006/07/14(金) 16:56:38
>>35
Still, that doesn't make sense.
Voldemort didn't know all of the prophecy. He just went to
the Godric Hollow to kill Harry Potter, not to make him
a horcrux.

Harry Potter is really interesting, isn't it?

Oh right, at that time he wouldn't have thought about making horcruxis. :3

I don't buy it.

>>31
But Dumbledore said in the book 1 that he didn't want to elliminate
the scar that he thinks came in handy. Why is that? If the scar is a
Horcrux, what he said doesn't fit.

>>40
Neither do I. Harry is going to kill Voldemort and get married to Ginny.
I bet my life on it.

I'm still not convinced Sirius Black is dead. Why can a person be dead
who's gone over the wall thing?

44 :Lubosuka:2006/07/15(土) 17:35:24
>>43
You are talking about, of course, the book 5, right?
Hmm, no, I'm not either. Sirius Black was really popular among
female readers like myself. But the fact that he's not shown up
in Harry's 6th year in Hogwarts means he's already....dead.

But I'm sure SB will be mentioned in the book 7. His brother Regulus
Black will no doubt appear, that's why.

I think you are right. I'm on your side.

In the beginning of the book 1, Dumbledore sure said the scar
was useful not to Harry Potter himself in person, but to Professor
MaCgonagal, who asked him if the scar should be removed.
Why? Because Harry was just around a year old then.

That was Dumledore's honest opinion on the scar.

I think it best that House elves kill voldemort.

So enslaving House elves makes perfect sense to wizarding communities.
If they were enlighten and started to think they should be independent,
there would be a riot which wizards can't put down.

>>36
I guess Herry Potter will find something important in Godric Hollow.
I don't know, but it may be a clue to a Horcrux and a possession of his
father and mother.

>>56
Speaking of house elves, what will happen to giants?
In the begining of the book 6, it seems like some giants took
the side of Voldemort, and if they are positioned to protect
a horcrux, it will be tough for Harry to get through. Grawp and
Hagrid (and Madam Maxim) will be needed to face them.

I forgot. What do you think will succeed the postition of the leader
of the Order of Phonix in the first place? They will back Harry up, I think, though.

>>61
The Dark Lord would never trust anyone. He wouldn't have entrusted
his precious Horcruxes to giants.

64 :Lubosuka:2006/07/23(日) 12:48:38
Long time no see!
I don't like house elves. I'd prefer Japanese wizards.
They are so charming I'm enchanted. Do you think they use some
magic to make me love them?

65 :Andrews:2006/07/23(日) 13:26:24
Hi! If you're still wondering how house elves can Apparate, J.K. Rowling has answered that question on her website:

http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/faq_view.cfm?id=73

"House-elves are different from wizards; they have their own brand of magic, and the ability to appear and disappear within the castle is necessary to them if they are to go about their work unseen, as house-elves traditionally do."

Personally, I think she really did make a mistake and it just scrambling to make up an excuse for it. ;)

66 :Lubosuka:2006/07/23(日) 13:39:37
>>65
I'll say, Andrews. I bet she just forgot House elves can pop in and
out anywhere in the castle before inventing Apparition.
Off the top of my head, Dobby Apparated in the book2 when Harry
was kept lying on a bed of the hospital wing. Then we still didn't know
about Apparition. I think she didn't think up the magic then.

In the book 1, Quirrel sent a bogus letter to keep Dumbldore away from himself
when he tried to gain the philosopher's stone. And if Apparition
had been mentioned then, Quirrel's scheme wouldn't have made sense.

67 :Lubosuka:2006/07/23(日) 13:52:21
If Harry doesn't learn Occulumency completely, He can't even
aim for Snape, who's a great Legilimency.

>>67
Some people, though very few, still believe Snape is on Harry's
side. They say Snape killed Dumbledore for reasons that
have a lot to do with protecting Harry.

Harry Potter is full of idiomatic expressions you can't pass up
as a learner of English, IMO.

Lubosuka is right.
As a matter of fact, Harry didn't even throw a spell toward Snape
in the volume 6 of Harry Potter because of lack of his proficiency
of the Occulumency spell. Even if Snape still watches over Harry
from the shadow, which I doubt he does, Harry will face Snape as
an arch-enemy.

>>65
I found this discription in the book 5, quate,
"Harry was sure that the cracking noise had been made by someone
Apparating or Disapparating. It was exactly the sound Dobby the
house-elf made when he vanished into thin air. Was it possible
that Dobby was here in Privet Drive?"

So your guess that J.K.Rowling made an excuse makes sense.
She didn't know what she was doing. You can't Apparate in
the Hogwarts castle of witch craft and wizardry except for
house-elves. That's more precise, I'd say.

Thank you. I've just skimed the article.
So J.K.Rowling didn't plan to let Snape kill the headmaster..

Anyway, what I find interesting is that, to my eye, the more stubarn the auther
becames, the more chance Harry got to survive.
Rowling seems a bit twisted and difficult. If people begin to think
Harry will survive, then she would start implying he won't.

Ah, it's hard for me to express what I have in mind in English...

76 :Jean:2006/08/20(日) 13:44:40
How do you think of Snape? I think maybe he is always on Dumbledo's side.
In order to get the trust of Voldemort,he killed Dumbledo.

>>76
I don't mean to push my opinion on you, but as I see it, Snape betrayed
Dumbledore's trust. For one thing, he made unbreakable vow which, as I'm sure
Snape knew, led to killing the headmaster in the end. For another, when he threw
Avada Kedavra curse, we wore a hatred expression on his face.
And this may come as a surprise to you, but the author once mentioned Snape was
really nasty so she wondered why he got his popularity from her readers...
All the evidence showed he's really been a double agent for the Dark Lord, IMO.

Of course, I understand why you think Snape is still on the phenix's side.
There's still a mistery of why Dumbledore kept believing in the turncoat.
Yes, that'll be answered in book 7, I think.

78 :Jean:2006/08/31(木) 15:26:35

So you've read the harry potter books. What about giving your input?

Whoa. It's popular belief here that: 1.Dumbledore knew he was dying and had Snape
"kill" him to protect Malfoy and protect his place as DeathEater. Snape was obligated
to protect Draco and finish his assignment if the kid chickened out. So Snape is actually
still a loyal spy for the Order. Not that Harry would care. 2. When cleaning out Grimmauld
Place, the kids find a locket. Horcrux? 3. RAB is Regulus because...the timeline and everything
fits and Rowling loves hiding clues in plain sight. 3. Rowling says a main character will die
in the last book but won't say who. What the hell is up with that?

>>87
>Dumbledore knew he was dying and had Snape
>"kill" him to protect Malfoy and protect his place as DeathEater

That doesn't make sense.
Why did Dumbledore try to convince Malfoy not to kill him?
The headmaster was really surprised to know Malfoy let death eaters
into Hogwarts right under his nose.

She wouldn't even have the time to visit ten percent of them.

Only once? Well, Harry seems to have failed to grip you.

Like I said, quite I enjoyed the books and the movies, but I wouldn't
label myself as a fan. Also, I don't have a lot of free time, and it feels
more useful to spend time on for instance spending time with people,
whether it be in real life or online, rather than re-reading a book I read
not too long ago.

No, you don't. As for me, however, I've re-read J.K.Rowling
because she helps me learn English, in addition to the interesting
story I think it's worth spending time with.

By the way, are you interested in the book 7? I'll deffinitely
read it when it's published.

I'm definitely looking forward to it, yeah :-D
It will be fascinating to see how the series will end, and how well she'll
manage to pull that off.

You should read it at least twice. That'll make you aware how well the plot
is thought out.

HP is addictive.

Growing numbers of people are influenced by Harry Potter. Actually,
I'm studying about love potion. When I get the knowledge, I'll concoct
one bottle worth of love potion and make one drink it. My friend, on the
other hand, does "swish and flick" to move feather up in the air.

What do you mean?
"hary potter" isn't a typo? Isn't there a problem of copyright
infringement with the movie?

Please don't pull our legs any more.
Anyway, I want to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
as soon as possible.
In case J.K.Rowling surfs the net and find this thread, I'd like
to say a thing. "Good luck with book 7!!"

Personally, Harry might finish Voldemort off by the thrust of the sword
of Griffindor.

>>117

>>119
I don't think so, but you can't rule out the possibility
she will search online by "Chat about Harry Potter".
If she does, she'll notice people disscuss her books in
the thread.
By the way, I can't wait for book 7. How about you?

Sorry to butt in, but Harry Potter is obviously a masterpiece.
What I'm a little worried about, however, is whether J.K.R could
creat more interesting a story than Harry Potter. I wouldn't
complain if she didn't, though.

>>121
I totally agree with you. I hope she'll be finished with book 7 soon.

I don't think Harry is the last horcrux.

Why don't you focus on Hermione Granger? Emma Watson, who will be
my wife, plays her.

Emma and I will no doubt be prisoners of love.

That's true. Harry Potter will be read by the next generations.

J.K. Rowling has said that Dobby did not Apparate. He used house-elf magic, which is different.

Dumbledore was trying to save Malfoy's soul. After someone kills a person the first time,
the second time is easier. Then Malfoy will become a death eater. Dumbledore wanted to
give Malfoy a chance to be a good person. He knew that Snape could do what had to be done
without losing his chance to be good, but Malfoy probably could not.

Do you have any idea what Dumbledore and Snape had a row about?
Snape said Dumbledore took for granted so much he couldn't do it anymore.
But what couldn't he do? Any idea?

Hmm, I guess she added that information after she was corrected.
